    Twitter Chat: Marcus Sheridan on Business Blogging and Content Marketing

    Last night, we were honored to have Marcus Sheridan (@thesaleslion) as our guest speaker at #AtomicChat. We know that businesses are gearing up for a big year in content marketing so it only made sense to look to an expert who continues to have much success in this field.

    We wanted to start the year off right, arming content marketers with smart moves in 2012, so we dove straight into the topic of ‘Dumb Things Content Marketers Do’. Our #AtomicChat participants listened intently, eating up every piece of advice Marcus had to offer. He also answered everyone’s pressing questions about business blogging.

    It was clear that people recognized the power of content and was amped about their own content strategy but they didn’t know how or where to start. We talked about these challenges which ranged from writer’s block and content creation to titles and SEO.

    Everyone Thinks Their Writing Sucks

    Lots of people wondered how Marcus got better at writing. To sum it up: practice makes perfect. Don't be discouraged by your writing skills (or as you may think, lack thereof). Writing consistently is key. The more you write, the better you get.

    Keep it Simple, Keep it Real

    Throw away the fancy words, don't be too buzz-wordy and just keep it real. “The simplest things are often the truest.” (quote by Richard Bach). And don't worry if you're not an A+ grammar student, your writing gets better after every post. Refer to the aforementioned rule and keep on truckin'.

    How to Give Exactly What Your Target Audience Wants

    This is one of the biggest blogging challenges our participants are having when it comes to producing great content. Don't be afraid to ask them what they want to hear, people love offering their feedback and opinions. Asking questions is the best way to engage and interact with your audience.

    Marcus, you write so much valuable content. Do you ever get writer's block and how do you deal with it??

    A business blog should revolve around the customers' wants and needs. Tune into what they are saying and/or asking whether they're posting it on your 'help' discussion board or sending you an email. Most likely, other customers have the same question.

    One of the driving forces of content marketing and a successful blog is visibility. As Marcus has pointed out in his past blog post, "SEO is the gift that keeps on giving."  So what's the secret sauce in building great content for SEO?

    Grab Attention with These Words

    I couldn't dismiss this recommendation but Marcus advised that some awesome key words to add in your titles are: dumb, stupid, crazy, crappy, idiot and suck.
